The Marketing Deep Dive

In a competitive business environment, entrepreneurs recognise that marketing is a crucial aspect of small business ownership, rather than a ‘nice-to-have’. In this 6 week online course you will be immersed in the strategic discipline of marketing and, not only will you develop a customer needs-focussed mindset that will filter down into the other aspects of your business, you will also begin implementing marketing tactics for your startup from the get-go.

Each week, the course content, case studies, class discussions, and activities will be geared towards practical application to your business. This course will also equip you with a uniquely South African marketing perspective, exploring the intricacies of the SA marketing landscape. In the first half of the course you will develop a sophisticated understanding of your customer, marketing environment, competition, and sales. You will refine your brand, differentiate your business in the market, and strategise around pricing, distribution, and marketing communication.

While there are a myriad of marketing tools available, digital marketing is usually the most feasible route for small business owners, given its accessibility and affordability. This is why we have dedicated the second half of the course to digital marketing and its various methods, including social media, search engine marketing, email, mobile, and so on. Given the course’s practical approach, you will walk away with tangible outcomes that can be immediately incorporated into your business. You will get hands-on - creating a customer profile, Facebook and Instagram advertising, a Google ad, a marketing email, and more.

Course Overview

Module 1

Customer

Regardless of how amazing you think your product or service is, if you don’t have customers then you don’t have a business. Marketing to customers is key, however, before you embark on this journey, it’s important to know who you’re going to marketing to and what methods are best suited for each of your customer segments. This module dives into why it’s critical to understand your customer and how they make their purchasing decisions.

Module 2

Sales and Goal Setting

Sales and marketing often work in parallel. The key to understanding sales and converting ‘would-be’ customers into brand loyal and repeat customers is knowing the sales funnel inside out! This module will focus on the different levels within a sales funnel and also touches on goal setting – a crucial component to any sales and marketing plan.

Module 3

Brands and Marketing

Brands are big business and can play a major role in moving your startup to the next level. In this module, we’ll focus on how to develop your company brand, including the brand personality, and some other key elements that tend to get forgotten but are necessary when it comes to scaling.

Module 4

Content Marketing

Just because you’re a startup with a limited budget doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t put a great marketing plan into place. The art of marketing, specifically when it comes to startups, is to focus on creating interest and impact. In this module, you’ll learn the basics of content marketing and discover how effective it can be in promoting your business.

Module 5

Social Media

Leveraging the power of social media might sound simple but it really is an art. In an age where customers can make or break your brand and business with one comment startups need to be focused, engaged and, above all, listen to what customers are saying (and not saying) online. In this module, we’ll provide a very practical step-by-step guide on what social media platforms are available, which platforms to leverage off and how to go about setting up an account on the platforms that best suit your business.

Module 6

Search Marketing and Your Personal Brand

Search engine marketing can be difficult to understand and even worse to implement. Our final module breaks search engine marketing down into its finer (and easier) details. We will also delve into the importance of developing your personal brand and how to leverage off that.

The Startup School

Learning Journey

Marketing today is far more diverse and complex than it was five or seven years ago, which is why viewing it as a much needed discipline as opposed to a “nice-to-have” is so crucial for startups who want to scale.

Our marketing course has been designed to provide entrepreneurs with a ROI toolset that is practical in its application and rigorous in its approach.
